This Week, Next Week and Last Month

Happy Sunday everyone. I hope you are having a good day. All is well here, where we’re in the middle of a bank holiday weekend, meaning no work tomorrow – yay! Ours has been spent so far doing the typically English thing of doing DIY (there is nothing like an early morning trip to B&Q to get the blood flowing). We are also having typical Bank holiday weather too – cold and rainy – though we did see a bit of sun yesterday afternoon.

Blog wise, I got two reviews posted this week – The Never-Open Desert Diner by James Anderson and a Kelly Link short story, The Summer People – both of which I really enjoyed. I also wrote about who I review for as part of the book blogger hop. Book wise I finished Don’t You Cry (see my Tuesday intro) which I’ll be reviewing tomorrow and have almost finished You’re Never Weird on the Internet by Felicia Day, which I picked up from the library and brought an end to my plan to not get any more books till I caught up with those I planned on reading *sigh*.

These books have been a nice end to a slightly mixed bag book wise, bringing me nicely to my April update and the books I loved (unfortunately there weren’t any) liked (there were a lot) and wish I hadn’t picked up (a couple).

Liked A Lot

Carrie by Stephen King which is the first Stephen King book I have read and was really enjoyable and not as gruesome as I thought.

The Summer People by Kelly Links which took me to the Holler and a mysterious house that seems to work miracles.

The Never-Open Desert Diner by James Anderson which took me to the desert and had me fall in love with a mix of interesting, damaged but inherently good human beings.

Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner which drew me in from the first page; I became so wrapped up in the lives of the characters I forgot I was reading a crime novel.

The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen which returned me to Sweden for another cracking crime story where there wasn’t a dysfunctional, alcoholic, detective in sight.

Not For Me

The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood which it was really difficult for me to say I didn’t enjoy because she is one of my favourite authors but this just didn’t click with me.

Mr Splitfoot by Samantha Hunt which I had such high hopes for but felt like it got lost in what it was trying to achieve, leaving me confused.

And that’s it from me for this week and this month. What have you been up to, and what have you read?

  1. Enjoy the bank holiday (hopefully the weather improves)- it’s been raining here a lot this week too. Missing, Presumed looks good- I saw a positive reviews for that one on another blog, so I’m curious.

    • I hope it does too but I’m not holding my breath. I would give Missing, Presumed a go if you can, I have read lots of positives about it from others too.

  2. Oh, a bank holiday sounds wonderful! Enjoy….and of your books, I am hoping to start Don’t You Cry this week…and I am ogling The Summer People and The Gingerbread House.

I have loved many Atwood books, but really disliked the MaddAddam trilogy—and it wasn’t just because it was dystopian, since I loved The Handmaid’s Tale—but it just didn’t speak to me.

I loved so many of her books, though, so I guess it’s okay to dislike one or two. LOL. Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    • It has been, despite the weather. I liked Maddaddam myself but I did struggle at first. Enjoy Don’t You Cry, I really enjoyed it. Have a good week!

  3. It’s a long weekend too Emma. I forgot to say that in my post. I think it’s Labour day weekend. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog – I don’t work Monday or Friday so it doesn’t mean much to me!

    Have a lovely week!

  4. I keep going back and forth on Mr. Splitfoot. I don’t think it’s something I will like, but it comes highly recommended.
    Have a great week!

  5. We don’t have a holiday until the last Monday in May. I’m really looking forward to having a day off and knowing that the school year will be almost over. Until then, it is just trudging on. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    • We have one then too – then a long wait till August for the next one. There is something nice about having a day off work that you haven’t had to book and doesn’t start with an S.

  6. Too bad about the Atwood and Mr. Splitfoot. I have both of those on my TBR list. I have met Atwood at a forum and she is super intelligent and very into science as influenced by her father at a young age. She signed all of my books!

  7. I remember reading my first Stephen King novel and being pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful an eloquent a writer he is – definitely not the cheesy horror I was expecting! To be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever pick up another Atwood novel – we had to read two of her novels in high school and I hated them both, so unfortunately I think high school English ruined her for me!

    • It was a lot more eloquent than I thought too. I think Atwood is like marmite, you love or hate her…in part down to when you read her. I won’t give up on her, just feel a little disappointed.

  8. Haha – we were up to some ‘typical bank holiday activities’ too. Spent four whole hours putting up a new shed, thankfully the weather was on our side, which is lucky really because lately the weather doesn’t know whether it’s coming or going!!

Would you read more Stephen King books having now read Carrie? Exploring his work in depth has been a goal of mine for the longest time!

    • Four hours on a shed…impressive. It takes me that long to make a book case. I would read more Stephen King but I did struggle with the bigger books. I feel like should read the biggies like The Shining but then will I be missing out on some lesser known gems?

  9. I hope you are having better weather as that we are having now. It almost feels like Summer here this weekend. And I hope next month will bring you some more books to love.
