This Week, Next Week: 29th May, 2016

Hi everyone – happy Sunday! I hope you’re having a good week and weekend. Mine has been filled with work this week but also fun. It’s my wedding anniversary this week so went out for a lovely meal last night, just my Hubble and I, and today we are doing a pub lunch with family. It’s also a long bank holiday weekend here too so – weather permitting- we’ll be heading out somewhere nice for a day trip tomorrow too.

Despite being out a lot for work this week, I managed to get two reviews posted this week – The Woman in Black, a ghost story by Susan Hill which I first read 20 years ago and has stood the test of time and The Girls by Emma Cline which is set in 1969 and is based on the Manson family. I loved this book and think it’s one of my favourites of the year so far. For those who aren’t sure, you can get a taster of how Emma Cline writes from her short story Marion, which I wrote about here.

Book wise, I finished my Tuesday Intro book, Deliver Her, which I enjoyed and will be reviewing this week and The Last Lullaby by Carin Gerhardsen (you can read on overview in last week’s update). I also picked up a couple of new books…

It’s a beautiful day for a regatta—until one of Sandhamn Island’s most prestigious residents is killed aboard his sailing yacht.

Oscar Juliander was a rich lawyer and deputy chairman of the prestigious Royal Swedish Yacht Club. While at first his death seems like a tragic accident, there is evidence of foul play. Police detective Thomas Andreasson teams up with local lawyer Nora Linde to investigate. As they work to uncover clues, they face resistance from an elite world where nothing but appearance matters.

When the rich and powerful inhabitants of Sweden’s idyllic island getaway come under scrutiny, Thomas and Nora must work closely and secretively to seek justice.

She is the girl with the dragon tattoo—a genius hacker and uncompromising misfit. He is a crusading journalist whose championing of the truth often brings him to the brink of prosecution.

Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it . . .

What about your week – how has it been? What have you read?

  2. Enjoy the pub lunch- sounds fun- and the long weekend too. Those are the best! I’m curious about Deliver Her, and both your new books look good as well. I like the sound of the yacht one. Have a great weekend!

    • It was lovely and made up for the grey day we’ve been having. closed Circles is the second in a series and I enjoyed the first book so fingers crossed for this one. I can’t resist Scandinavian crime fiction.

  3. Congrats on your anniversary…a pub lunch sounds wonderful, as does the lovely meal for the two of you.

I’m glad you loved Emma Cline’s The Girls, as I’ll be reading it soon. (In fact, many of my books this month have “girls” in the title: The Girls in the Garden, The Girls, and All the Missing Girls). A bit much?

I’m also very curious about the continuing Millennium series. I only read the first book in Larsson’s trilogy, but I loved the Salander girl.

Enjoy your bank holiday weekend…so glad you all have a holiday, too, since we’re going on about our Memorial Day…lol.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Thank you. It was a lovely lunch…nice and stodgy. I loved the millennium series and was anxious about this one but it’s a hand-me-down and recommended by the person who passed it on so I have my fingers crossed. Enjoy your long weekend.

  4. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary – glad you had a lovely meal together:). I agree about The Woman in Black – it’s a really well written play and very atmospheric on stage. Have you read Susan Hill’s crime series? Have a great week and enjoy the Bank Holiday.

    • Thank you. I have officially eaten too much this weekend! I haven’t read that much Susan Hill to be honest, though I’ve enjoyed all I have. I haven’t read any of the crime series. I’ll keep my eye out.

    • It does doesn’t it. The first, Still Waters, was good so I have high hopes for this one. I really can’t recommend The Girls enough (if you couldn’t already tell 😜)

  5. We saw The Woman in Black as a play before I knew it was a book. There was a little disclaimer on the program warning that the play could be scary and I thought “how scary can a play be?” turns out pretty freaking scary! I’d like to give the book a try as well. The Girls is on my TBR. It sounds fascinating! Have a great week!

    • I had the same thoughts and everyone I’ve taken has come out with the same feeling. The book has the same tension. Enjoy if you pick up and The Girls, which I am just in love with!

  6. I didn’t realize The Woman in Black was a book, though I knew it was a film. I’m intrigued – I’m a bit of wimp when it comes to being scared, and I have quite an active imagination as it is!

    • Yes and around for years. It isn’t gory at all just a really good, old-fashioned, ghost story – the type you would hear around a campfire.

  8. Oh Happy Anniversary! I hope the luncheon is fun as well. I hope you have better weather, it is raining all day here in Connecticut. Those books both look really good. I have never read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I did see the movie. It was really good and dark. I love dark writing. Have a great week!
