Weekly update

Morning all and welcome to another Sunday – I hope you’ve had a good week.  Mine was a lot better than the one before, in large part because I think I caught up on the sleep that I have been missing these last two years.  I feel rested and relaxed and that is a lovely thing.

Not that it was all smooth going as I transition into my new life – I had a few panicky moments – but for the most part, I am convinced I’ve made the right decision, especially after taking a training course Friday and seeing that, whilst I may not have the formal qualifications, I definitely have the skills…now I just need to get some work!  If you do want to know more about how my new life is going, I wrote about it on my non-book blog here

The other nice thing about finally being in control of my own time is that I got lots of reading done.  I hadn’t planned on being too strict on myself this week, seeing it as a bit of a “half-holiday” so I spent more time reading that I normally can.  It felt great, especially as I have found my reading mojo again thanks to Moranthology by Caitlin Moran (review to follow but you can read more about the book here).

Blogging wise, I managed two reviews, which is a good number for me.  First up was The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain where I basically decided that, in my eyes, Diane Chamberlain can do no wrong.  I loved this book and didn’t mind having my heart-strings pulled just a little bit with a story of love and misunderstanding along with a few southern, social, mores in 1994 America.

Second up was my first every book by Tammy Cohen – They All Fall Down – which I also loved (though maybe not quite as much as The Stolen Marriage).  I thought it was really clever, setting the story in a mental health hospital – meaning lots of unreliable narrators and a feeling that I never quite knew what was going on.

They all fall down

As well as these, I did my September month in review, revisiting the books I loved, liked and really weren’t for me, and shared the books I’d added to my shelves in the last week – there were only too as I’m drowning in books at the moment and need to slow down my book buying / requesting.

And that’s it for me this week.  How about you – how was your week, reading and otherwise?  Let me know, I’m nosey!

  1. I am glad to hear you are feeling great about your decision. I would love to make decisions like that but I have so many people relying on me right now. I wish I would have stayed with my old job that allowed me more freedom with my time. Of course, I wasn’t making as much money and I did get behind on all my CC payments. It has been a tough year money wise with my having to cover the mortgage for my sister in Florida so often.
Hopefully things will clear up soon.
I am glad to hear that you are so happy with your decision and you are getting things you want to do done. Have a great week!

    • Money is the crux f it isn’t it? A few years ago, I was the main breadwinner and couldn’t dream of doing this but thankfully that isn’t the case now and it’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down -who knows if it would still be something I could do next year? I hope you get sorted financially – having people rely on you can be draining x

  2. I would love to catch up on my sleep from the last two years. I keep thinking I will do that each summer, but somehow it doesn’t happen. I need to do this, and I just read a cool quote that might help me:

“Tonight we will exhale and teach. Now it’s time to inhale. There is the in-breath and there is the out-breath, and it’s easy to believe that we must exhale all the time, without ever inhaling. But the inhale is absolutely essential if you want to continue to exhale.”

I think I’ll add this to my favorite quotes at Goodreads.

Congratulations to you on your journey.

  3. I loved The Stolen Marriage, too…it was my favorite for October. I am also drawn to They All Fall Down…mental health hospital settings keep me interested, too.

Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

  4. I Am Watching You looks like a tense thriller, and We All Fall Down sounds good too . A thriller set in a mental hospital- hmm that has possibilities. May have to get that one.

Love the cover of The Stolen marriage.

  5. So happy to hear you are enjoying your new life! Not having to get up at 5, train at 6, work through lunch, or late at night, and all that physical activity sounds like you made the right decision! Good luck!

  7. A good night’s sleep can never be undervalued. After one where I sleep well the days sings after it. Oh that it would happen every night. Love your brief summary of The Stolen Marriage – such an excellent read. Haven’t seen anyone dislike it yet.

  8. When I switched from a high stress high pressure job to being a stay at home mom it was such a challenging transition to figure out how to please the type A side of me but not run myself ragged liked I’d been doing for years. It takes some figuring! I’ve got A Stolen Marriage coming up on my reading list and I’m really looking forward to it. Have a great week!

    • It does take time to adjust I think. I was trucking along till Wednesday when I hit a bit of a boredom wall – fixed by sorting my daughters bedroom. I just want to find the balance. Fingers crossed.
