Weekly update

Morning all and happy Sunday – I hope you are having a good weekend and for those taking part in the Dewey 24 Hour Readathon, you managed to get some sleep.  I took part for the first time this week and didn’t do too badly – two books read, one on the way (so I know I’ll have things to review next week!).

Unfortunately, I will be closing the covers a little early as I have lamb to roast and a cake to bake as my parents are on their way over for Sunday lunch.  It was fun though, not so much for the reading but for the fact that I met new people and got to visit blogs I’ve not visited before – it’s my favourite thing about any type of reading challenge.  Did you take part? How did you do?

As well as a good week for reading, this was a good week for blogging for me, with three reviews posted and only two more books left to catch up with my overdue ARCs (yay!).  AND the reviews were all for books I really enjoyed – I loved two of them in fact.

First up, was Herbs by Judith Hann, a book with some of the most beautiful photographs in it and one which made me think I can have the herb garden I’ve always dreamt about – and will have next year, I am sure. There are also some great sounding recipes in here, non of which I have tried yet but which seem like ones I could manage.

Then I reviewed The Last Day of Emily Lindsey by Nic Joseph, which I picked because of the cover and the title and with not much thought to the story (I am shallow, I know!).  It’s lucky I am shallow though because otherwise I may not have gotten to read a truly excellent book, with great characters, great twist, great turns and great writing.

Finally, there was A Pocketful of Crows by Joanne M. Harris, an author who always surprises me and who I’ve loved since Chocolat.  This is a short but beautifully written tale of a young woman who falls in love and the fallout when the course of that love doesn’t run smoothly.  The imagery in this book is amazing and I fell in love with it from the first page. An amazing read.

So, a very good week and I’m hoping for more with my latest additions to my shelves, one of which is from my favourite author (and worth falling off the NetGalley wagon for).

And that’s it for me this week.  How about you – how was your week, reading and otherwise?  Let me know, I’m nosey!

  1. I also took part for the first time! And I loved it. I also read two books, but they were VERY big ones xD so I am pretty happy with my result 🙂 and I also did go to sleep, didn’t stay up too long. I think enough is enough 🙂

  2. I didn’t participate…but I did read most of the day. I was finishing my fourth book to post for my updates.

Someday I hope to read the whole 24 hours.

After seeing your post yesterday, I went over to NetGalley to request The Good Liar. I’ve read every book by this author…in fact, she used to send me review books. But not feeling neglected at all, I keep reading her. LOL.

Enjoy your Sunday lunch and your new week! Lamb sounds wonderful, and it’s been years since I’ve had any!

    • It would be nice to read for 24 hours but a 7 year old to entertain I need some sleep to keep up. Catherine McKenzie is a favourite of mine – we will need to compare notes 😊 I was told the lamb was lovely – being a veggie I just get to cook it!

  3. Congratulations – I didn’t take part – but it’s on my bucket list, so I’ll see if I can make next year’s event as it sounds fabulous. The Sunday lunch sounds lovely – it’s always special to sit around the table with loved ones:). Have a great week, Emma:)

  4. I didn’t do the read-a-thon either. My Miguel is leaving this week until Thursday night so I will probably get a ton of reading in instead of watching television with him. I love Katherine McKenzie! I didn’t realize she had a new book coming out. Both of your new books look awesome. Happy reading and have a great week!

    • I always read more without my other half around – though in part because I can’t sleep well. I listen to ever creaking sound. I hadn’t realised about Mckenzie’s book either – got to love netgalley!

  5. This was also my first readathon and I think we had similar experiences 🙂 I made it through three books (which was great!) by my favorite part was meeting new people and discovering new blogs. “Herbs” sounds interesting – I just tried an herb garden for the first time this summer with really mixed results but loved having good recipies to “test” everything out in. Maybe this would be good inspiration for another try next spring?

  6. If you review the herb book I have a monthly link up for books about food called Foodies Read. You can find each month’s link on the sidebar of my blog. We’d love to have you.

  7. I finally got back on track with my reading after a big slump so I’m just hoping that’s it finally over! Still need to choose my next book though and I must execute an ebook cull to get rid of what I no longer need to read. I used to do readathons over at bookcrossing every month but don’t really have the time now!

  8. Only 2 overdue ARCs? You are my hero! Your Sunday lunch sounds delicious! I have a friend who is from the UK and I was telling her that I wasn’t a lamb fan even though it always sounds so good in books. Apparently the lamb in US is not nearly as good as UK lamb. Not quite sure why that is but I’m hoping to discover if it’s true one day! I really need to try the reatdathon next time. I always talk myself out of it because there’s always some kind of a conflict but there’s ALWAYS going to be a conflict so I just need to give it a try. Have a great week!

    • I am slightly anally retentive about ARCs and don’t like to be behind. I have been feeling soooooo guiltily about it. As a veggie I have no idea if the lamb is different but I’ll check with my hubby who is from the states – he says he likes mine so I guess that’s a good thing x
