Book blogger hop: advance reading

book-blogger-hop-finalThis week, I’m once again joining in with Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer‘s book blogger hop, where they post a question which you and other bloggers answer, hopping from blog to blog to see people’s answers. This week, the question is…

How far in advance do you read the books you have scheduled for review?

And the answer is it really depends.  I don’t read a huge amount of review books compared to other bloggers I don’t think, generally sticking to requesting those I am pretty sure I will like (given the author or subject/genre), which means I’m often quite keen to read them and so do as soon as the opportunity arises.

Often, this is months before publication and where I used to fall down is that I wouldn’t review them straight away.  I would make some notes and there they would sit, waiting to be fully written up until close to the release date…by which point the book was no longer clear in my mind and I’m sure I missed much of what I might originally wanted to say.

Now, I review a book as soon as I’ve read it.  I have a personal goal of within 24 hours and am usually quite good at sticking to it.  It’s then scheduled for whenever it needs to be scheduled for.  I’m even organised enough now to have a calendar which shows if I’ve got something posted on a particular day so I can plan when other books with similar review dates can go up (*pats self on back as it’s only taken two years to get this far!).

There is another benefit to this and that’s that I can post the reviews on netgalley earlier than the release date and keep my % up above 80, the magic number and (hopefully) then get approved for more of the books I request (so really want).

What about you, do you read in advance or wait till close to the release date?  If you do, how do you plan your time so you have enough of it to read and review the book without going over (a big fear of mine if I leave things)?

  1. This is an interesting question for me because I don’t schedule my reviews or the books I’m about to read. This is probably due to the fact that I don’t get books from publishers specifically to review them. I know if I did schedule reading for a due date, I’d definitely get behind. I like to read on my own pace with no pressure.

  2. I had to give up reviewing with deadlines all together. I wasn’t enjoying book blogging AT ALL like that. I also have to review as soon as I read it because I’m like Dory. No memory whatsoever! I actually review the books AS I’m reading them LOL 🙂 Great Post 🙂

  3. I usually post as soon as I can finalize my written review. If the book is an ARC, I will still write up my review as soon as I finish the book, but I will not publish my review until the date of publication.

  4. I try to stay quite organised as I like to post my reviews on or around the actual release day. I use the sticky note app on my desktop where I list all the arcs I have to review in date order. Like you, I make a point of writing my reviews very quickly after reading them. Thank you for sharing this – it’s fascinating to see how other bloggers approach this issue:).

  5. I am very organized, and I have my reviews done way ahead of time.

I like to have everything done ahead of time in life as well.

I write my reviews as I read so they are done. 🙂

Great you write them right after reading now…saves your brain. 🙂 I would forget if I waited.

Nice answer, and nice seeing you on the blog hop.

    Happy Hopping!!

  6. I don’t have a humongous number of review copies compared to others either – I worry over the thought of too many publication dates screaming at me all at once! So I don’t overstretch myself I list the few I do accept for review on a spreadsheet in order of publication date, and generally read in that order. It’s nothing fancy but I can instantly see when it’s time to decline new requests and it helps if I want to read my own bought books too. My most advanced copy isn’t published until 2018, but as I’m ahead (for now!) I’m definitely making time to read this in soon as it looks like a good ‘un! 🙂

  7. WOW. You REALLY are organized about this! I admire you, and wish I could do the same, but alas, I just can’t….Lol. This is one of the reasons I don’t request books from publishers. I don’t want to feel that I HAVE to review them. The other reason is that I have SO many books I’ve purchased over a period of time, and have yet to read. I need to get to them!

I do try to review books as soon as I’ve finished reading them. If these are for blog tours, I will then schedule the post for when it’s supposed to be published. But I don’t do that many reviews for blog tours, anyway.

Thanks for sharing your GREAT answer!! Hope you’re having a lovely Saturday!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • I wasn’t always but I don’t like to feel guilty or stressed with review copies. I might not be as organised if I had a lot of review copies but I don’t request many and I don’t do blog tours at the moment so I don’t have that stress.

  8. Interesting blog and I admire your perseverance having in the past posted reviews online myself. I stopped for several reasons, mainly the site I posted on closed down but also I’d get really annoyed when some plank (probably failed schoolteachers) would harangue me for not approaching the review as if it was a high school homework assignment. I’m a grown up, I have a Lit degree, and I’ll do things my own way.
And third, I liked to review some quirky books which tended to confuse people. One of my favourites was “How To Talk About Books You Have Not Read” by Pierre Bayard, a French literature prof.
The concept astounded many people but to me, because Bayard’s premise was that books are mainly about ideas and if we are familiar with the ideas a book expresses we can talk about it, something I have always thought. My review of the book (which in keeping with the spirit of the concept I had not read) attracted hundreds of comments.
I’m going to follow your blog in the hope it may inspire me to create a reviews blog, I sometimes feel I should start again.
